Replika is the better pick on Android, or if you want voice and video calls. LORAX is better if you want people with their own schedules who write first, in your language, on an iPhone. Both are free to start.

Underneath, the two apps are built around different things. Replika gives you one companion you shape and keep. LORAX gives you a closed cast of more than 250 characters in 30 countries, each on their own clock, and the first message always comes from them. Everyone in LORAX is fictional and AI-generated.

What Replika does better

It runs where you are. Replika’s own llms.txt says the product is available on iOS, Android and the web, and there is a listing on Google Play. If you carry an Android phone, this comparison is already over: LORAX has no Android build and nothing to chat with in a browser. That is not a small gap, and no feature of ours closes it.

It talks out loud. The Replika homepage offers to “Call your Rep whenever you need to talk, or just to hang out,” and their llms.txt describes a 2026 rebuild with 3D avatars, natural voice conversations and real-time video calls. LORAX has no calling of any kind. If hearing a voice is the point for you, pick Replika and don’t look back.

It costs less to try, and it has been around longer. The in-app purchases on Replika’s App Store listing start at $7.99 a month, well under our $29.99. Their own site dates the company to 2017 and keeps a press and research page that collects peer-reviewed studies about the product, which is a kind of evidence we cannot match, because we launched in September 2026 and have no research record at all. On both of those, they are simply ahead.

What LORAX does differently

• She starts it, and she is not always there. Each character runs on a real time zone with a sleep window and a job, so she is offline for most of the day and asleep at night. Write at 3 a.m. and the message is delivered but not read. More in she texts first.
• You don’t pick people off a shelf. The cast is closed and already exists. Someone turns up in your live stream and messages you hours later, or a character you already know mentions a friend, and that friend writes to you a few days on. The first move is always theirs.
• The room keeps moving without you. Put two characters together and they talk to each other about their day, about each other, and about you. Leave the app and the group carries on at a slower pace for a few days before it stops.
• Photos come from where she is right now, not from a gallery. Ask twice in one afternoon and she is wearing the same thing in both, in the same kitchen, because the app keeps the day’s scene consistent.

Who should pick which

Pick Replika if you want one companion you shape yourself, on any device, and you want to hear a voice. It is the cheaper monthly commitment, it has nine years of history behind it, and the web version means you are not tied to a phone at all.

Pick LORAX if the thing that breaks the illusion for you is an app that waits. You want a message at 1 a.m. from someone whose day produced it, a reply that lands at a different speed each time, and a group chat that moved while you were at work. You also need an iPhone, and you should be comfortable that a character can be unavailable when you want her.

What LORAX can’t do

No Android and no browser version. No voice calls and no video calls. Characters never send voice notes or videos, though you can send both and she will respond to what is in them. Nothing about closeness is guaranteed to progress, and she can say no.

And the plainest one: don’t pick LORAX if you want a companion who waits for you. Ours have their own hours, and some days you will open the app to find her asleep.
