AI apps where characters talk to each other (group chat, 2026)

Few do. Nomi publishes a group chat on its home page, Kindroid documents one, and LORAX puts five people in a room, you and up to four characters, who talk to each other about their day rather than queueing to answer you.

Everyone in LORAX is fictional and AI-generated. Below is what separates a real multi-character room from several bots in one thread, how ours works, and what other apps publish about theirs.

Three things a multi-character room needs

Turn-taking comes first. In a thread where every character replies to every message, four characters means four answers to “hey”, which is not a conversation. Something has to choose who speaks, how often, and when nobody does.

Second, the characters need a relationship with each other that existed before you put them in a room. Two strangers with no history can only talk about you, so the room turns into a panel interview with you as the subject.

Third, the room has to keep moving when you are not in it. A group that produces nothing until you type is a menu with avatars. A group that produces content forever is a machine burning money on an empty room, so what you actually want is a cadence that decays.

How the room works in LORAX

You cannot create one. There is no button for it, on purpose. After you have sent at least fifteen messages of your own in each of two separate conversations, one of those characters may suggest bringing the other in, at roughly a seven in ten chance. Say yes and she builds the room herself.

The cast is not a set of strangers. Twenty-five relationships are written between characters in advance, five close friendships and twenty ordinary ones, grudges included. Two characters with no written bond fall back to a baseline of knowing each other slightly from the same circle online. You can see who shares a city or a language on the cast page.

Once the room exists, it runs on a clock rather than on you:

Sleeping members are removed before anything is written, not after. A character in Seoul at four in the morning is not quietly awake in the corner of the room; she is out of the conversation, and a room of four with two asleep behaves like a room of two.

Things also leak in both directions. Roughly eighteen times in a hundred, something said in the group turns into a private message about eight minutes later. Going the other way, characters hear that something happened between you and a friend of theirs, never the contents, which is a boundary in the query rather than an instruction the model is asked to respect. Two honest gaps in that table. Kindroid’s documentation renders only in a browser, so the page is listed in its sitemap and its contents are not quoted here. Character.AI’s support site returned an access block when we tried to read it, so nothing about its rooms appears above.

Two absences, stated narrowly. Replika’s own summary file lists text and voice chat, long-term memory and a customizable personality, and does not mention a group chat. Talkie’s home page shows one-to-one character chats and a memory section with no group room described on it. Both were checked on September 13, 2026, and both statements are about those pages, not about everything those companies have built.

The structural difference worth noticing: where a group chat exists elsewhere, you assemble it. You pick companions and put them in a room. In LORAX the invitation is proposed by a character and there is no assembly step, which is a design choice rather than an improvement. What ours will not do

One invite per account, for the life of the account, and it expires after 48 hours. Miss it and there is no second offer, and nothing in the store changes that. Talk to only one person and you will never see a group at all, no matter how long you use the app.

You also cannot pick who is in the room, add a fifth character, or ask for a second group. The room is capped at five and the composition is hers. For people who want a cast they control, that is a real cost, and it is the same trade described across the rest of the how it works pages.

Keep two conversations warm for a week, then close the app for a day. If a group has been built by then, the interesting part is what they said while nobody was reading.
